Dove Hunting: Opening Day 2012
It was a warm morning but Ben Gallier and I made our way to the fields in hopes of seeing a few birds flying. We couldn’t start our hunt til after 12PM we found ourselves fighting the afternoon heat and being just the two of us, we decided to prey over the fields in an attempt to flush a few birds instead of waiting for them to come to us. We had little success as the birds kept their distance beyond shooting range.
As the the day passed and the temperature cooled the birds began to fly on their own, still we had trouble covering the large fields alone. Most of the birds still managed to stay just out of shooting range. We each took a few shots but at the end of the day we only downed one Dove.
Beginning this weekend we’ll be able to start our hunt before noon, leaving us with high expectations to catch the birds flying early. Hopefully the conditions will be right and we’ll have a few more people to help cover the fields.
